Ensure initial configuration is complete to use this functionality.
The relationship type for the parent account field can be changed from lookup to master-detail, which is the default for newly created orgs. To leverage expanded account visibility, the Affiliation VMOC can be modified to control the number of affiliations retrieved.
The Sphere of Influence is a custom S-control called SphereofInfluence. Data for the Sphere of Influence is stored in the Affiliation_vod custom object.
Veeva CRM Lightning Ready does not support S-controls. Admins for Lightning Ready orgs should instead configure the SphereOfInfluenceLgtnVod Visualforce page.
Supported fields for the Sphere of Influence GUI are shown below. All fields are accessible via the related list on the account from all platforms.

The following fields on the Affiliation_vod object can be hidden from the Sphere of Influence and Affiliations related lists using FLS:

To maintain data quality within the Affiliations object, the Sphere of Influence prevents the creation of duplicate affiliations.
The Sphere of Influence screen displays affiliations with the direction of influence between the accounts indicated by the style of the arrow connecting them. If there are more than 12 affiliations on the iPad platform or more than 20 affiliations on the Online platform, pagination controls display in the lower right corner of the screen. The user can also filter the affiliations based on Role, Account Type, and Influence by tapping the filter button in the toolbar. CRM for iPad offers the ability to do more robust filtering with custom fields and the Relationship strength, Account Identifier, and Therapeutic Area. Filtering on the Therapeutic Area is a ‘like’ clause, where the value chosen is a match among all values. For example: a search of “Oncology” displays Accounts with Therapeutic values that match on “Pediatrics, Oncology”, “Geriatrics, Oncology” and “Oncology” values.
Territory View Toggle is available on CRM for iPad. This toggle is set with the TERRITORY_VIEW_INSIDE_TERRITORY and TERRITORY_VIEW_OUTSIDE_TERRITORY Veeva Messages.
Users can perform a series of actions on an account in the Sphere of Influence. Tap an account icon and the affiliation details window displays where the user can edit the attributes of the affiliation, create a call, launch media, navigate to the Account Detail page, or redraw the Sphere with that account in the center. On CRM for iPad, by tapping on the Account Name, you are able to traverse the sphere quickly with just one tap.
Users are also able to create new account affiliations in the Sphere. Tap the new record button in the toolbar to open the account search dialog. After selecting an account, the user can set the Influence, Role, and Comments attributes for the new affiliation. On CRM for iPad, depending on FLS, the user can also edit the Relationship Strength, Account Identifier, Custom Fields and Therapeutic Area.
Some customers allow end users to delete affiliations from the Sphere of Influence. Users must have Delete permissions on the Affiliations_vod object to delete an affiliation.
To delete an affiliation:
- Navigate to the Sphere of Influence.
- Select the affiliation you want to delete.
- Select More Actions.
- Select Delete.
- SelectYes to delete the affiliation.
When deleting an affiliation record, the system deletes the inverse affiliation as well.
Users can view out-of-territory relationships for one of the visible accounts - For example, if Account A is aligned to the user, and is affiliated to Account B, users can see this relationship even if Account B is not aligned to the user.
The Territory View Toggle is available on the iPad platform and is set with the TERRITORY_VIEW_INSIDE_TERRITORY_vod and TERRITORY_VIEW_OUTSIDE_TERRITORY_vod Veeva Messages.
Account identifier can be displayed for Inside Territory Affiliations, with FLS read permission to the Account_identifier_vod field on the Account object. For Outside Territory Affiliations, provide FLS read permission to the To_Account_Identifier_vod field on the Affilication_vod object.
To pull in out-of-territory accounts in the Sphere of Influence into a user’s territory, Veeva Network credentials must be configured in the org and the user’s Network_Customer_Master_Mode_vod Network Setting must = 1.
The account is assigned to a territory based on the following configurations:

Additional Attributes for Affiliations
To allow users to view relationship strength in the UI, provide read-only permission to the Relationship_Strength_vod field on the Affiliation_vod object. To allow users to view and edit relationship strength in the UI, provide edit permission to the Relationship_Strength_vod field on the Affiliation_vod object.
To define a relationship’s therapeutic area of relevance, provide either read-only or edit permission to the Therapeutic_Area_vod field on Affiliation_vod object
To view affiliation count badge in the UI,provide FLS edit permission to the To_Account_Affiliation_Count_vod field. The number of secondary affiliations displays as a badge on the Account icon. The number value is deployed unpopulated and automatically populates as users view affiliation records by clicking the account name hyperlink in the SOI user interface, therefore edit permission is recommended.
Users can create custom picklists and multi-select picklists on the Affiliation_vod object. Place these on the Affiliation_vod page layout in the order they should display.
If fields are placed in a single-column section, they display top-down in the Sphere of Influence. If fields are placed in a two-column section, they display left to right. Set the Enable Custom Relationship Fields Veeva Setting to 1 to enable the Sphere of Influence to read and display custom fields from the Affiliation_vod page layout. Custom fields are also available for filtering.
Users are able to view bookmarks on the Sphere of Influence if the user has read permission to the Bookmark_vod object and at least one bookmark record with the record type Sphere_Of_Influence_vod is visible to the user. Users are also able to create bookmarks if the user has create permission to the Bookmark_vod object and permission to the Sphere_Of_Influence_vod record type on this object.
To control the number of affiliations synced when changing the Parent Account field type from M-D to Lookup, the VMOC can be modified.
Disabling Influence Direction
Some countries have data visibility standards requiring influence direction to be disabled. In this case, the Sphere of Influence displays a connection between affiliations without the influence direction.
To disable influence associations, ensure the user does not have FLS permission to the the Influence_vod field on the Affiliation_vod object. A black line displays between the accounts, but an arrow does not display.
If users have the ability to create new affiliations, these affiliations are created with an influence direction based on the default value defined in the influence picklist.
When configured, a Sphere of Influence button displays in the bottom navigation bar for an Account Details page.
The center circle has the Name of the selected Account, with the relationships to all of their affiliated accounts surrounded in boxes. Each account displays the Account Name, with TSF Preferred Location or Primary Parent where applicable, and the Account Identifier field if FLS is enabled.
By selecting the Sphere of Influence icon, the user is able to load a full view of the Sphere of Influence for this account, with the account drawn in the center of the page, with the first eight affiliations drawn around it. The ability to navigate to see more affiliations is accessible via the arrow buttons. The user can filter the affiliations by using the filter icon.
Users can access more actions on each affiliated account by selecting the account. More actions display in the bottom navigation bar.
Current supported actions are:
- Record a Call - A new call report opens with the selected Account as the Primary Account of the Call
- Launch Media - CLM launches with the selected Account as the Primary Account
- View Account - The Account Details page is launched for the selected Account
- View Sphere - The Sphere of Influence redraws with the selected Account as the focus of the Sphere
Users can also create new affiliations by selecting the New button, or creating a new line in the Affiliations related list for this Account.
