Users can create and manage Account Hierarchies and view the structure of all types of business accounts (IDNs, hospitals, clinics, etc.) and the HCPs associated to those accounts.
For example, Sarah Jones needs to identify potential Cholecap clients. She uses the Account Hierarchy to view each account’s details so she can compile a list of prospects.
Ensure initial configuration is complete to use this functionality.
Select View Hierarchy on the Account Detail screen to view the account hierarchy. The hierarchy displays on a separate page and shows all immediate parents and children of the selected account (one level up and one level down). Selecting a related account makes that account the parent account. The view then displays the new related accounts.
Color-Coding Account Types
Different types of accounts can be color coded in the hierarchy for easy identification. Color can also be used to indicate other account attributes, for example, record type, for quick identification.
To indicate the color of an account attribute, modify the formula in the Color_vod field on the Account object. Valid color values are specified in the Color_vod field on the Call2_vod object.
The example formula shown below sets non-person accounts to green and all other accounts to clear.

The following formula example displays all accounts with DO, MD, or NP credentials as purple.

Do not add the Color_vod field to a page layout. The field cannot be directly translated.
Users can view the badge displaying the count of an account’s children in the to identify the largest accounts within a hierarchy.
To enable the badge, grant edit permission to the Parent_Affiliation_Count_vod and Child_Affiliation_Count_vod fields on the Child_Account_vod object.
Number values are delivered unpopulated. They automatically populate as users view hierarchy records, therefore, edit permission is recommended.
When searching child accounts from the Members section of the Account Detail page, the primary address displays next to each account. This helps users differentiate between accounts based on the address.
It is expected that customers data load both the Child_Account_vod objects and the value for the Primary_Account_vod field on the Account object.
Territories in Account Hierarchy
Account Hierarchy visibility for accounts outside the user's Territory is only supported for offline devices.
Accounts are assigned to a territory based on the following configurations:

Territory_vod field is read only and the NETWORK_NAW_ASSIGN_ALL_TERR Network Setting is disabled.
All previous territories + User's default territory or first in the list.

Territory_vod field is read only and the NETWORK_NAW_ASSIGN_ALL_TERR_vod Network Setting is enabled.
All previous territories + All of the User's assigned territories (not child territories).
Allow User to select territories via a multi-select
Territory_vod field is NOT read only (ignores the NETWORK_NAW_ASSIGN_ALL_TERR setting).
Territory_vod field is always required for the multi-select option (otherwise the User would not be able to add the Account to their view).
Territories displayed are all territories the User is assigned to.
All previous territories +
Territories selected by User.
Changing the Parent_Account_vod field type may have an impact on permissions. Reports using the master-detail field type are impacted by changing these permissions.
Platform Specific Details
Users can view the account hierarchy in CRM for iPad by selecting the hierarchy button on an account. The following conditions apply:
- To display the hierarchy button, an account must have at least one child account
- When a user selects the hierarchy button, only direct children of the account display
- If a child account has its own child accounts, the hierarchy button displays in the child account row so the user can view those accounts
- The hierarchy icon displays if the user has read permissions on the Child_Account_vod object and the business account has at least one child account
The hierarchy button does not display when viewing a cycle plan.
Users can navigate the account hierarchy by tapping the hierarchy button on an account. The following conditions apply:
- An account must have at least one child account to display the hierarchy button
- Only direct children of the account display when a user clicks the hierarchy button
- If a child account has its own child accounts, the hierarchy button displays in that row so the user can view those accounts
The hierarchy button does not display when viewing a cycle plan.
Users can search for child accounts by typing letters in the search box in the center of the screen. This refreshes the child accounts instantly with the search results.
Users can perform operations on a parent or child account by tapping the action button in the account box. The following options are available:
- View Account – closes the account hierarchy window and opens the Account Detail screen for the selected account
- Record a Call – creates a new call report for the selected account
- Launch Media – creates a new call report for the selected account and brings the user directly into the media player
Make Primary – This operation, which displays only for parent accounts, makes the selected account the primary parent for the account in focus
To enable the Make Primary functionality, add the Save_Primary_vod button to the appropriate Child Account page layouts.
If Decoupled DCRs are enabled, the Make Primary button functionality is disabled.
Account Hierarchy - Windows
Users can navigate the account hierarchy by tapping the hierarchy button on an account's details page. The following conditions apply:
- Only direct children of the account display when a user selects the hierarchy button
- If a child account has its own child accounts, the hierarchy button displays in the bottom navigation when the user selects this account
The user may filter parent and child accounts by typing letters in the search box in the top right of the screen. This refreshes the child accounts instantly with the search results.
The user can perform operations on a parent or child account by tapping action buttons in the bottom navigation bar. The options available are:
- View Account – closes the account hierarchy window and opens the Account Detail page for the selected account
- Center –This operation makes the selected account the new account in focus.
Users can now view child accounts instead of person accounts while using the Account Hierarchy feature throughout the application. Users can also navigate to a list of child accounts for a specific Parent Account by selecting the Account Hierarchy button on the Scheduler page for offline devices. This eliminates the need for a user to navigate away from the Account Hierarchy page to view the Child Account.
The Account Hierarchy button is available for all orgs.
For example, Sarah is visiting Chilton Memorial Hospital. She wants to see all of the child accounts. She selects the View Hierarchy button to view the associated accounts.
To enable this feature:
- Ensure the Enable Child Account Veeva Setting is selected
- Grant users FLS read permission to the Parent_Child_name_vod field on the Child_Account_vod object.
The Account Plan Overlay for Account Plan Details is not supported for Child Account Hierarchies.
This feature displays all child accounts (business-to-business and business-to-person) as "Parent_Child_Name". For example, A Center for Dermatology Ackerman Clinton or Newton Memorial Hospital A Center for Dermatology.
Users select the View Related Accounts button from a parent account to view all child accounts.
From this view, users can navigate to the appropriate Parent or other Child Accounts. Users can also select the Account Hierarchy button in My Schedule to view Child Accounts affiliated with the Parent Account.
